An Outdoor Bench for Your Garden

by guestpost on April 12, 2010

An outdoor bench can be a defining characteristic of the outdoor areas of your home. Garden chairs are perfectly fine, but they can create a feeling of separation. An outdoor bench requires people to sit together – it is the perfect place to relax and talk for a while. Have you ever noticed how even strangers will sit together and talk on a park bench? You can get the same thing from an outdoor bench in your own yard. Even if it is only an addition to your current set of outdoor furniture, an outdoor bench can create a warm informal element that makes your open space all the more inviting.

Multipurpose Outdoor Benches

by guestpost on February 22, 2010

Outdoor benches come in various designs, and perform various functions.  There are entirely wooden benches that are backless and without any armrests.  These are called garden benches.  Then there are ones with metal bases.  Outdoor benches can be used to sit down between gardening spells, to enjoy the sunset, or even to relax with a cup of coffee.  In the early days, garden benches were the only pieces of outdoor furniture available.  Since they are long and plank like, they can seat a couple of people with enough space in the middle to place some snacks and a few cups of coffee.

Outdoor benches can make your outdoor space a truly stylish and comfortable area but only if the designs you choose are appropriate to your landscaping or deck design.  If you are not familiar with the principles of design, here are a few tips to help your search for great looking outdoor benches to go in your great looking yard.  One important element of design is shape.  Think about the shapes that are common in your yard or garden.  Do you have a lot of angles or are the dominant shapes curving?  This will help you determine what kinds of shapes you should look for in outdoor benches.  It’s a good idea to echo the shapes that already exist in your outdoor area.  Another element of design is color.  This will depend on what kinds of plants or trees you have in your yard.  Is there a lot of green in your yard or do you have more rocks and mulch than plants?  Dark, rich woods look great in very woody yards, whereas paler colors can complement an outdoor space with few plants.  These two aspects of design can really help you narrow your search for the perfect outdoor benches, so take some time to notice how they do or don’t work in design.
